Port Moresby Police Chief concludes police station visits

Report by Constable Sylvester Wemuru - Police Media

National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Chief Inspector Silva Sika today (Thursday, February 16) concluded his first phase of visits to all the police stations under his command, with a visit to the Seven Mile Police Station.

According to Mr Sika, the visits to the police stations were to see how police officers are doing their jobs in the nation's capital. The other reason for the visit was to take stock of police manpower and logistics within his command.

Mr Sika told members that he will carry out Police Commissioner David Manning`s directive to weed out undisciplined officers within the Constabulary. He told the policemen to be disciplined, committed and honest in the discharge of their duties.

Mr Sika had organised police stations to host parades where police officers were addressed and were also reminded of what they should do and what they should not do.

The public was also informed during the parades to keep the city clean and stop street vending.

Mr Sika confirmed that after the station visits and awareness carried out throughout the city by the police, many improvements had been seen around the city from the public and the police officers. Mr Sika said the station parades will continue. He said that is to make sure that all the officers who are stepping out of line are disciplined and brought back to know their place in the constabulary.

The Metropolitan Commander further added that as a leader he must make time available to visit his officers to know them by face and name, so that he can better assist them in the carriage of their duties, listen to their concerns and hold them accountable for their actions, if required.

"I am pleased with what the police officers are doing in the city. Only a few who had stepped out of line had been identified and will be dealt with accordingly either criminally or administratively. We must walk the talk. I am satisfied with the first visits to all the police stations throughout the city. Such visits will continue throughout my term as the Metropolitan Superintendent of NCD," Mr Sika said.

Mr Sika started his visit of all police stations from Zone one in the Port Moresby South Electorate, then to Zone Two in the Port Moresby North East and lastly Zone three in the Port Moresby Northwest Electorate.
