Papua New Guinea Advances Cancer Care Partnership with Taiwan Hospital

Efforts to improve cancer care within Papua New Guinea have taken a significant step forward through a partnership with Chang Hua Christian Hospital in Taiwan. The goal is to offer affordable options for patients seeking treatment.

Dr. Kone Sobi, the medical director of Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), expressed confidence in the collaboration following a recent visit to Chang Hua Hospital. The hospital's international accreditation by renowned healthcare bodies like JCI reassures PNG patients about the quality of care they can receive there.

Ben Wang, a representative from the Taiwan economic cultural office, highlighted that this initiative not only addresses urgent healthcare needs in PNG but also promotes international cooperation for better healthcare outcomes.

To facilitate medical referrals for PNG patients, Chang Hua Christian Hospital extended an invitation to Dr. Sobi and a delegation from PMGH and the University of Papua New Guinea School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Their visit aimed to explore specialist healthcare from November 26 to December 2, 2023, including participation in medical forums and expos.

The delegation gained insights into Taiwan’s medical advancements, including a notable collaboration between Microsoft delegates and Taiwan’s medical authority, emphasizing innovation in healthcare.

Dr. Sobi's visit underscored Taiwan's advanced medical technology and development scale at Chang Hua Christian Hospital, presenting an appealing option for Papua New Guineans seeking cancer treatment.

The hospital's proficient English-speaking staff, along with reasonable treatment costs and budget-friendly travel options between Port Moresby and Taiwan, via Manila, offer a promising prospect for Papua New Guinean cancer patients.

The collaborative referral service between Port Moresby General Hospital and Chang Hua Christian Hospital holds significant promise, aiming to provide quality healthcare and alleviate the suffering of individuals battling cancer."
