Postponement of PNG Games due to Lack of Preparation by Provinces
The much-anticipated PNG Games, scheduled from January 10-20 in Port Moresby, faces a delay owing to insufficient readiness by participating provinces.
The Games executive committee announced the postponement without specifying a new date for the event. This decision follows a series of deferrals over the past three years. Initially planned for 2019 in Southern Highlands, the biennial event encountered setbacks due to funding shortages, clashes with national events like general elections, Apec meetings, and later, the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The pivotal decision to reschedule the eighth edition of this multi-sport spectacle emerged from consultations with PNG Games Council members (provinces). It hinged upon assurances from respective provincial administrations regarding the essential expenses crucial for participation.
Concerns arose when 18 out of 22 provinces failed to demonstrate their readiness to participate in the Games. Recent reports from provincial teams indicated that only Manus and Milne Bay had secured plane tickets, while Gulf arranged for buses to reach Port Moresby, joining Central and the National Capital District.
Regrettably, four provinces did not meet the minimum requirements for participation, prompting the committee to extend the timeline for fundraising efforts. With less than two weeks remaining before the opening ceremony, most provinces were still grappling with financial constraints for team travel, accommodation, meals, uniforms, and other essential costs.
Acknowledging the collaborative support extended by various entities, including national sporting bodies, the National Capital District Commission, and the National Cultural Commission, the PNG Games Council Chairman, Albert Veratau, emphasized the need for provincial government backing to bolster their respective teams.
Highlighting the Games' significant impact on citizens across provinces, the Council stressed its national importance, urging the national government to allocate dedicated funding, reminiscent of the support provided during the 5th PNG Games in 2012.
Looking ahead, the Council plans a PNG Games seminar in Port Moresby to review the event and its charter, marking the first evaluation in two decades since its inception in 2003. Noteworthy sports personalities, including Sir Peter Ipatas and Tony Green, are expected to contribute to discussions aimed at charting the way forward.
Moreover, Oro, East Sepik, and Eastern Highlands provinces will present their bids to host the 9th PNG Games, while Western Highlands withdrew from contention after failing to meet the bid fee requirement.
The delay in the PNG Games underscores the necessity for concerted efforts and support from all stakeholders to ensure a successful and inclusive sporting event that unites the nation.
