Australia Collaborates with PNG to Enhance Renewable Energy Access and Reliability

In a bid to bolster Papua New Guinea's (PNG) access to dependable renewable energy sources, Australia has joined forces, undertaking strategic initiatives to address the country's electrification demands.

According to the Australian High Commission  in PNG through a social media post states that one of the key endeavors involves significant repairs conducted at the Ramu 1 hydropower station situated in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands Province. This operation has unlocked up to 17 megawatts of additional generation capacity for the Ramu grid, a development set to substantially enhance the reliability of power supply in major centers spanning Madang, Morobe, and the Highlands region.

Furthermore, Australia's intervention extends to the Port Moresby grid, where the focus lies on the installation of new capacitor banks and transformers at pivotal substations. These interventions aim to fortify power stability, thereby mitigating instances of power outages within the region.

Notably, refurbishment initiatives have culminated in the completion of improvement works at the Rouna hydropower stations situated in Sogeri, Central Province. These enhancements are directed toward augmenting both the reliability and generation capacity of the grid. Anticipated advancements are on the horizon, with further improvements projected to materialize in early 2024.

The collaborative efforts between Australia and PNG underscore a concerted commitment to fortify renewable energy access and reliability, fostering substantial progress in meeting the nation's escalating electrification needs.
