 Port Moresby, January 5, 2024 - The National Public Service 8th dedication service convened at the Sir John Guise Stadium witnessed a resolute call from the Minister for Public Service and Member for Nuku Open, Joe Sungi, urging all government agency heads to exercise vigilance and decisiveness in handling Human Resource matters with financial implications.

In a firm statement, Minister Sungi underscored the importance of prudence and vigilance in management and supervisory roles for the year 2024, particularly in addressing HR issues intersecting with financial concerns. Noting the devolution of HR powers to agency heads from December 1, 2023, Sungi emphasized the need for mentoring, coaching, and guiding subordinates to elevate performance standards, aligning with efforts to modernize the Public Service through ICT integration.

"This strong appeal goes out again to all agency heads to exercise prudence and decisiveness in the management and supervision of Human Resource matters that have fiscal consequences," Minister Sungi emphasized during the event.

Highlighting the significance of the dedication service, which marks the commencement of the working year, Minister Sungi emphasized its purpose: to encourage public servants to dedicate their personal lives and professional roles to service delivery, seeking divine guidance in their endeavors throughout the new year.

Reflecting on the theme, "Building the nation in unity through service delivery," Minister Sungi referenced Psalms 133, urging public servants to collaborate in unity for effective service delivery. He posed introspective questions on how collective efforts could shape the nation and emphasized the need for personal conviction to overcome detrimental habits such as poor attendance, inappropriate conduct, and attitudes incongruent with their positions.

"I urge you to introspect and find the determination to break away from detrimental habits that hinder effective service delivery, such as poor conduct, laxity, seeking undue favors, and falling short of the expected standards of your roles," Minister Sungi urged the assembled public servants.

The dedication service concluded with a resounding call for unity, dedication, and a commitment to delivering efficient services to the people, reflecting the aspirations of a modernized and efficient Public Service for Papua New Guinea.
