SP PNG Hunters' Players Commence NRL Preseason Training with Dolphins

The SP PNG Hunters proudly announced the participation of two of their players, Judah Rimbu and Epel Kapinias, currently engaged in full-time preseason training alongside the Dolphins NRL squad in preparation for the upcoming 2024 season. This collaboration marks a significant aspect of the strategic alliance between the SP PNG Hunters and the Dolphins NRL club, aiming to facilitate the integration of more local players from Papua New Guinea into the NRL Competition.

Under the mentorship of Wayne Bennett, coach of the Dolphins, Judah Rimbu and Epel Kapinias commenced their training this week. Their focus over the upcoming eight-week preseason will be dedicated to earning a full-time NRL contract.

The duo exhibited exceptional prowess during their outstanding performances for the Kumuls in the Pacific championships, making this opportunity a well-deserved recognition of their talent. Remarkably, this marks Judah’s second preseason stint with the Dolphins.

Expressing his excitement, SP PNG Hunters CEO Scott Barker stated, “I am genuinely pleased to continue our strategic pathway partnership with the Dolphins NRL franchise. This platform once again allows our players to showcase their talents within the NRL system, playing a vital role in the broader PNG Rugby League ecosystem. We saw direct benefits last year when former Hunters center Rodrick Tai received multiple offers after emerging from this pathway.”

NRL Dolphins Head Coach Wayne Bennett also shared his delight, saying, “I’m extremely pleased to be able to offer this opportunity again to the Hunters players. I know how important it is for not just them personally, but for PNG Rugby League itself. I look forward to their training sessions with us.”

The collaborative effort between SP PNG Hunters and Dolphins NRL seeks to fortify the ties between the two rugby league communities, aiming to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the sport in Papua New Guinea.
