PNG PM Marape Announces US$66 Million TVET Enhancement Project
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – January 7, 2023 - Prime Minister Hon. James Marape reaffirmed the Government's steadfast commitment to technical and vocational education, unveiling the US$66 million (K228.89 million) 'Improved Technical and Vocational Education for Employment' project under the Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST).
Prime Minister Marape's declaration follows a substantial meeting with Higher Education Research Science and Technology Minister Hon. Don Polye and Acting-Secretary Prof Fr Jan Czuba on Thursday, January 4, 2023.
The project aims to accomplish key objectives:
- Strengthen governance and management structures within TVET colleges.
- Facilitate high-quality TVET teacher training programs.
- Develop demand-driven curriculum for TVET programs.
- Establish gender-responsive TVET infrastructure and enhance equipment.
- Foster the development of National TVET governance and industry linkages.
Co-funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the initiative focuses on 10 technical colleges with a strategic emphasis on construction and agriculture. These colleges will serve as pivotal entry points to shape and emulate TVET Centers of Excellence, expandable within clusters, corridors of secondary technical schools, and other TVET institutions.
Contributions from the governments of Australia, People’s Republic of China, Japan, and the European Union have been instrumental in advancing this pivotal sector.
"The Improved TVET for Employment project will receive co-financing from the ADB, the Government of Australia, and the Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG)," Prime Minister Marape explained. "ADB will provide a concessional loan of US$50 million (K171.89 million), Australia will grant US$10 million (K34.38 million), and GoPNG will offer counterpart funding support of US$6 million (K20.63 million)."
"These pooled resources will significantly upgrade and modernize the 10 technical colleges," affirmed Prime Minister Marape. "The project encompasses esteemed institutions such as the University of Goroka, with a specific focus on TVET teacher training."
The technical colleges involved in the project include Port Moresby Technical College, Mt. Hagen Technical College, Goroka Technical College, Madang Technical College, Lae Polytechnic Institute, Simbu Don Bosco Technical Institute, West New Britain Technical College, Bougainville Technical College, Kiunga TVET Center, and Highlands Agriculture College.
