Air Niugini Executes First Live Fish Export Flight from Port Moresby to Asia

Air Niugini has successfully delivered Papua New Guinea’s first-ever direct shipment of live fish to Hong Kong, a milestone in the country's efforts to boost seafood exports. The flight departed Port Moresby on June 25, carrying four tonnes of fish aboard a Boeing 767.

The live fish were transported in high-tech containers specially built to sustain aquatic life during flight, with features to regulate water conditions, oxygen levels, and temperature.

This direct export differs from previous live seafood shipments which transited through Australia. The recent operation was initiated by a local seafood exporter and is being viewed as a breakthrough in PNG’s international export capabilities.

Air Niugini’s Chief Executive Officer, Gary Seddon, described the direct route as a game changer for time-sensitive exports. He said air transport is crucial for preserving the condition of live marine products and expanding reach into premium international markets.

Mr. Seddon also emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance and advised interested exporters to engage early with Air Niugini Cargo to manage the complex logistics of live animal transport.

The initiative marks a significant advancement in Air Niugini’s efforts to diversify and enhance Papua New Guinea’s export portfolio, especially in the growing global seafood market.
