PNG Technology Minister Condemns Attack on Telecommunication Infrastructure
The Papua New Guinea Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Timothy Masiu, has issued a stern condemnation against the criminal actions targeting Telikom fibre cable chambers in the National Capital District. Two such chambers were sabotaged, causing a temporary disruption in communication services.
Although the affected communications infrastructure was restored on Thursday afternoon, Minister Masiu expressed concern over the incident's impact on internet services, leading to severe congestion on Wednesday and Thursday. He emphasized that sabotaging critical communication infrastructure is not only an offense but also a breach of Part 3 of the National ICT Act.

Mr. Masiu urged individuals, particularly those with harmful intent, to cease criminal activities and show respect for government infrastructure that plays a vital role in providing essential services to citizens. Additionally, he called upon every Papua New Guinean to refrain from spreading misinformation and disinformation on social media, emphasizing the potential for such actions to sow disunity and harm within the community.
Minister Masiu, highlighting the gravity of the situation, cautioned that his department is actively monitoring all social media platforms. The objective is to verify reports of social unrest in the city and collaborate with the police to ensure that those responsible for criminal acts are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice.
The Minister concluded by emphasizing the collective responsibility of the public in maintaining the integrity of communication infrastructure and promoting a cohesive and informed society.
