High-Ranking PNG Police Commander Suspended Amidst Probe into Force's Response to Tax Protest Chaos
Port Moresby, January 16, 2024 - The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) has taken action by suspending NCD/Central Police Commander Anthony Wagambie Junior, initiating an investigation into disciplinary offenses under Part IV of the Police Act 1998.
Acting Commissioner of Police and Controller of the State of Emergency, Donald Yamasombi, announced the suspension today, marking the first of what he described as "potentially several more" related to the events of January 10, 2024. The incident saw members of the Police Force protesting against an increased tax on their salaries, leading to widespread looting and arson in the National Capital District.
The suspension, falling under Part IV of the Police Act 1998, is effective for 21 days, during which the RPNGC Internal Affairs Directorate (IAD) will conduct a thorough investigation.
"The people of Port Moresby and the country expect answers as to how the looting and destruction came about," emphasized Yamasombi, acknowledging the failure of police leadership during the incident. Officers were reported to have abandoned their posts to attend strike meetings, lacking proper discipline enforcement.
Yamasombi expressed his discontent with police strikes, deeming them unacceptable given the constitutionally mandated role and crucial duty owed to the public. He criticized the lack of proper procedures on January 10, which left the city vulnerable to criminal activity.
Attributing the issue to a failure of leadership at the local level, Yamasombi stressed the responsibility of every commander to maintain discipline within their ranks. He pledged a thorough and impartial investigation, promising further transparency as the process unfolds.
This development signifies a significant step in addressing public concerns about the police response to recent events in Port Moresby. The IAD investigation is expected to unveil details surrounding the looting and potential misconduct by police personnel, with further suspensions and disciplinary actions anticipated in the coming weeks.
