The CTBT, which prohibits nuclear weapons test explosions and any other nuclear explosions for both civilian and military purposes across all environments, was initially presented and concluded on June 15, 2023, in the National Parliament. The signing of the Instrument of Ratification signifies the government's careful consideration and approval of the key UN Convention, officially committing Papua New Guinea to adhere to the stipulations, conditions, and requirements outlined in the Treaty.
Minister Tkatchenko, expressing satisfaction after the signing, highlighted the significance of Papua New Guinea's decision to join the global efforts against nuclear testing. "The process has taken some time, but Papua New Guinea has ratified and given consent to be bound by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty," he stated. "It is a relief, and the government is content that this Treaty stands as a crucial measure against nuclear testing worldwide. We now take our place among our other world partner nations."
Joining the ranks of 187 states that have signed and 174 that have ratified the Treaty, Papua New Guinea aims to contribute to the collective effort to address the challenges and impacts of nuclear testing on a global scale. Minister Tkatchenko emphasized that the country, like other nations party to the Treaty, understands the potential dangers of nuclear testing and is committed to playing its part in preventing the spread of radioactive nuclear material.
"Papua New Guinea's participation in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is a proactive step towards global security and sets a precedent for a new wave of arms control agreements. We join other nations in our commitment to putting an end to nuclear testing and creating a safer world for future generations," concluded Minister Tkatchenko.
