Papua New Guinea Faces Elevated Security Concerns, Tourism Industry Suffers Blow

In a recent report by the Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA), Papua New Guinea (PNG) is being highlighted as an exceptionally high-security risk destination, with particular emphasis on the concerns for travelers from the United States, Australia, and China. TPA Chief Executive Officer, Eric Uvovo, disclosed that the conclusion was reached after extensive research, monitoring travel advisories, and analyzing media coverage from key source markets, all indicating an elevated security risk rating.

Uvovo expressed deep concern over the impact of recent events on the tourism industry in PNG, citing the cancellation of two cruise liners scheduled to visit the country this year due to civil unrest on January 10. He strongly condemned the recent attacks on tourists, brutal killings in the Highlands, and the kidnapping of a helicopter crew in Hela, emphasizing the devastating effects on local communities and service providers.

The TPA CEO acknowledged that PNG has been subject to negative publicity not only from these incidents but also from the civil unrest that garnered international media attention, portraying the entire country as an unsafe destination for travelers. Uvovo underscored the urgent need for government intervention to address the escalating law and order issues, which are adversely affecting the tourism industry.

"With serious law and order issues traumatizing our country's economy, we seek immediate intervention by the Government to curb the surge in violent crimes," Uvovo stated. "Normalcy must be restored to encourage consumer confidence in PNG as a tourist destination."

Urging Papua New Guineans to be responsible and law-abiding citizens, he called for a demonstration of respect, care, and national pride not only for tourists but for every resident. Uvovo advised potential visitors to PNG to book their travels with reputable tour operators in the country and encouraged international visitors to reach out to TPA for further information about trustworthy tour operators.
