PNG Police Commissioner Issues Warning Following Major Drug Bust in Port Moresby
Papua New Guinea Police Commissioner David Manning has sounded the alarm on the burgeoning drug trade, which he asserts poses a significant threat to national and regional security. This warning comes in the wake of a substantial drug bust in Port Moresby, where two women, two former police officers, and seven others were apprehended last Saturday.
The individuals in question are currently under interrogation on suspicion of trafficking methamphetamine and being in possession of firearms and military-grade body armor. Commissioner Manning emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the pervasive spread of dangerous drugs, notably methamphetamines, in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and neighboring regions.
Addressing the media last night, Commissioner Manning pledged a relentless pursuit of criminal syndicates involved in drug trafficking. He commended the diligent efforts of law enforcement personnel in dismantling such operations but stressed the importance of collective vigilance in combating this menace.
Furthermore, Manning urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspicions of drug-related activities. He reiterated the community's shared responsibility in safeguarding against the threats posed by drug trafficking.
The arrested suspects are currently held in custody at the Waigani (nine) and Boroko (two) police stations. Among them are two former police officers previously dismissed from the force as part of disciplinary measures. Commissioner Manning affirmed that vigilance over these individuals had been maintained post-dismissal, leading to their subsequent apprehension.
A senior police official revealed that the initial apprehension followed observations of suspicious behavior by the group in a vehicle. Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of firearms and illicit substances at a residence in Laurabada, prompting a coordinated raid by Water Police personnel, detectives, and members of the Special Services Division.
The property under scrutiny, which also housed a small office equipped with surveillance cameras, raises further suspicions regarding its involvement in illicit activities. The recovered contraband, including firearms and methamphetamine, underscores the severity of the situation, with law enforcement officials warning of the potential long-term consequences if left unchecked.
Efforts to obtain comments from the drug squad and crime offices regarding the ongoing investigation remain inconclusive at present.
The recent drug bust and subsequent warnings from Commissioner Manning underscore the pressing need for concerted action to combat the proliferation of illicit drugs and associated criminal activities, ensuring the safety and security of communities in PNG and beyond.
