PNG DICT Urges Government Bodies to Register Social Media Accounts for Transparency and Security

In a bid to enhance transparency and security in online communications, Mr. Steven Matainaho, the Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in Papua New Guinea, has issued a directive urging all public bodies, including government agencies, to register their official social media accounts with the relevant authorities.

This directive aligns with guidelines established by the National Executive Council (NEC) and the Digital Government Act 2022, emphasizing the necessity for compliance with regulations to ensure responsible usage of social media platforms.

Mr. Matainaho underscored the critical importance of adhering to these regulations to foster transparency, accountability, and responsible social media engagement among government entities. He stressed the urgency of establishing secure and trustworthy online presences in today's digital landscape, marred by the proliferation of misinformation and fake news.

"Social media security is paramount for public bodies in the face of rampant misinformation and fake news in the digital age," stated Secretary Matainaho.

Registering official social media accounts enables agencies to combat the dissemination of false information and maintain the integrity of public communication channels. Moreover, it facilitates the process of identifying and taking down fake accounts, thereby safeguarding the public's access to accurate information.

Secretary Matainaho urged government entities to prioritize obtaining blue tick verification, particularly on platforms like Facebook. The verification badge serves as a hallmark of authenticity and credibility, distinguishing genuine accounts from impersonators and counterfeit profiles.

"Verification enhances online presence, simplifies the identification and removal of fake accounts, and ensures that the public receives accurate information," highlighted Secretary Matainaho.

In light of these recommendations, DICT urges all government departments, department heads, and politicians to proactively register their social media accounts and uphold the authenticity and security of their online presence.

For inquiries regarding registration procedures, social media security measures, and obtaining blue tick verification, public bodies are encouraged to reach out to the DICT Social Media Management Desk at dict-smmd@ict.gov.pg.

This initiative reflects Papua New Guinea's commitment to leveraging technology for transparent and secure government communications in the digital era.
