PNG Set for 5G Rollout in Major Cities, Says ICT Minister
Papua New Guinea is taking its next big leap in digital connectivity with 5G services set to roll out in five major urban centres. This announcement was made by ICT Minister Hon. Timothy Masiu during the swearing-in ceremony of the NICTA and UAS Boards.
Minister Masiu confirmed that telco operators will begin deploying 5G technology in Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Goroka, and Kokopo — marking a significant advancement in the country's digital infrastructure.
The development comes as the NICTA Spectrum Roadmap 2025–2030 concludes its consultation phase. The roadmap outlines a strategic plan for expanding PNG’s mobile spectrum from 447.6 MHz to 900 MHz, and enabling new technologies including Wi-Fi 6E, mmWave, and satellite broadband.
Key initiatives include reassigning underutilised spectrum to more efficient operators, supporting market-driven spectrum pricing, and enabling Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) to expand rural broadband using unlicensed bands.
According to Masiu, the roadmap is a key part of PNG’s Vision 2050 and the Digital Transformation Policy, laying the foundation for more affordable data, better coverage, and digital inclusion across sectors.
