PNG to See Major Digital Infrastructure Boost in 2024, Says DICT

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has unveiled a series of major advancements planned for the country’s digital infrastructure and services in 2024.

DICT Secretary Mr. Steven Matainaho announced that the department has accelerated the integration of various cloud services, including IP address assignment, DNS, website, and email solutions, for over 140 government agencies.

A notable development involves a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the PNG Digital ICT Cluster Inc., which will oversee the implementation of websites for all District Development Authorities (DDAs) and Provincial Health Authorities (PHAs) by the end of the year.

Matainaho further indicated that the management of cloud infrastructure, including the Government Private Network, will be handed over to PNG DATACO LIMITED to improve both efficiency and security.

The National Cyber Security Centre (CSOC) is now tracking cybersecurity threats across more than 75 government agencies and over 1,000 endpoint devices, as stated by Matainaho.

In September 2024, the DICT plans to launch the Citizens’ Government Portal, designed to streamline essential services and feature a Digital Wallet App for managing digital certificates and permits.

Additionally, the PNG Customs Service is spearheading the G2B Single Window Platform Project to simplify business processes across regulatory agencies.

Datec PNG Limited is starting a scoping exercise for the eCabinet Project, while the National Procurement Commission, with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is initiating the scoping for the eProcurement Project.

The department is also in the process of testing standardized endpoint devices and is finalizing a Corporate User Group (CUG) Mobile Plan with Telikom PNG for deployment across the public service.

Secretary Matainaho underscored that these initiatives are part of the DICT’s broader efforts to enhance governance, efficiency, and citizen empowerment, positioning Papua New Guinea as a leader in regional digital transformation.
