Papua New Guinea Barramundis Triumph Over Denmark in CWC Challenge League
Papua New Guinea’s Barramundis secured a strong start in the 2024-2026 Cricket World Cup (CWC) Challenge League by defeating Denmark by six wickets in their opening match held in Kenya yesterday.
The Barramundis, who won the toss and elected to bowl, restricted Denmark to 80 runs before chasing down the target with ease. Denmark’s innings was marked by a sluggish start, but they managed to gain some momentum halfway through their batting lineup. Their top three scorers were Abdul Hashmi with 21 runs off 34 balls, Saif Ahmad contributing 15 off 19 balls, and Surya Anand adding 15 off 33 balls.
However, Denmark’s efforts were thwarted by Papua New Guinea's powerful bowling attack, which saw the Danish side all out by the 26th over. Barras’ bowler Kabua Morea shone with an impressive five-wicket haul, taking 5/29. He was supported by Alei Nao, who claimed 4/20, and Michael Charlie with 1/8.
Kabua Morea’s outstanding performance earned him the player of the match title, contributing significantly to PNG’s dominant position in the fixture.
In the second innings, the Barramundis wasted no time in reaching the target, using just 13 overs to claim victory. PNG’s top scorers were Hiri Hiri, who remained unbeaten on 28, Sese Bau with 18 off 21 balls, and Charles Amini, who chipped in with 12 off 17 balls. Denmark’s bowlers Saif Ahmad, Surya Anand, and Jonas Henriksen managed to claim a few wickets, but their efforts were insufficient to stop PNG’s steady march to victory.
The Barramundis, coached by Taitenda Taibu, are determined to regain their One Day International (ODI) status. Their next match is scheduled against Jersey tomorrow afternoon, PNG local time.
