Big Hypocrite’ – Tomuriesa Hits Back at Marape’s Political Tactics on Domestic Abuse
Papua New Guinea’s Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Douglas Tomuriesa, has expressed disappointment over a recent statement made by Prime Minister James Marape. According to Tomuriesa, Marape used former Prime Minister and PNC Party Leader Hon. Peter O’Neill’s personal family matter as a political tactic. Tomuriesa criticized Marape's approach, suggesting the Prime Minister should “be fair or be quiet” regarding such sensitive issues.
Tomuriesa pointed out that Marape has not issued lengthy statements condemning domestic violence or abuse allegedly committed by his own Ministers. He highlighted the Opposition's firm stance against gender-based violence, stating, "The Opposition condemns gender-based violence in the strongest terms possible and stands against violence in our society.” Tomuriesa expressed disappointment that Marape selectively addresses such issues only when politically convenient.
In his remarks, Tomuriesa questioned Marape’s response to incidents involving his government members. He referenced the case of former Minister Hon. Aiye Tambua, who was reportedly involved in the alleged abuse of his own family, and the case of Hon. Jimmy Maladina, who was arrested for domestic violence in Sydney, Australia. Tomuriesa called attention to Marape's lack of public condemnation in these instances, questioning the consistency of Marape’s stance on gender-based violence.
The Opposition Leader also stated that O'Neill’s personal matter with his former partner is being addressed through the proper legal channels, and that O’Neill has adequately informed the public of his perspective on the issue. Tomuriesa criticized Marape’s handling of the situation, describing it as hypocritical and politically motivated.
According to Tomuriesa, Marape’s actions reflect a “disappointing” inconsistency, and he challenged the Prime Minister to apply the same standards of condemnation to his own Ministers’ alleged actions.
