Political Opponents Blamed for Circulating False Maserati Allegations in PNG
PNG’s Finance Minister and Member for Wapenamanda, Miki Kaeok, has accused political opponents of intentionally spreading unfounded rumors about his and his staff’s alleged personal use of Maserati Quattroporte vehicles. He described these claims as misleading and completely false.
Mr. Kaeok clarified that rumors suggesting he and his team used three of the 33 Maseratis for personal purposes were baseless. He explained that these vehicles were simply on display at the T-Wharf in Fairfax Harbour, Port Moresby, and were never at his home or office.
“The photo circulating online, showing the three Maseratis parked at Fairfax Harbour, was solely for display,” Mr. Kaeok asserted. “The suggestion that I have taken them out for personal use is an outright lie.”
The Minister alleged that the false rumors were a deliberate effort by his political opponents to harm his reputation and mislead the public.
Mr. Kaeok emphasized that all 33 Maserati vehicles are to be sold through the standard tender process. Acting CEO of the National Procurement Commission, Joe Sapa, confirmed that a Public Tender Notice was issued last month for the remaining vehicles, allowing interested buyers to participate.
Mr. Sapa added that each Maserati is priced at K500,000, with a non-refundable K500 application fee. He also noted that interested parties could arrange to inspect the cars upon request.
