Acting PNG PM Mirisim Supports Call to Split Western Province for Improved Services

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Works and Highways, Hon. Solan Mirisim, launched the Western Province Integrated Development Plan 2023–2027 in Daru, signaling a renewed focus on sustainable development and partnerships for growth.

The launch, organized by the Fly River Provincial Government, brought together key partners, including the PNG Sustainable Development Program (PNGSDP), OK Tedi Mining Limited, and the Australian High Commission. The event underscored a collective vision for the province’s progress and prosperity.

Governor for Western Province, Hon. Taboi Awi Yoto, expressed gratitude to the National Government and international partners, emphasizing the critical role of the Australian High Commission’s regional office in Daru. “This partnership exemplifies the collaboration we need to achieve sustainable development,” Governor Yoto said, adding that the plan aims for residents to have access to health, education, food security, and financial opportunities.

Australian High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency John Feakes, reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to Western Province, highlighting significant investments in health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure. “Our modern partnership reflects shared values—better education, reliable healthcare, and greater opportunities for our people. We are here for the long term, as neighbors, friends, and equal partners,” he stated.

Chief Justice Sir Gibuma Gibbs Salika, a Western Province native, called for a strategic division of the province to enhance service delivery. “Western Province is too large to manage effectively. I propose creating North Fly Province and South Fly Province to ensure services reach our people,” he suggested during the event.

Acting Prime Minister Mirisim acknowledged the Chief Justice’s proposal, noting that the government is considering creating additional provinces and districts before the 2027 elections. “Your suggestion is timely. The Marape-Rosso government is committed to ensuring development reaches every doorstep. Splitting the province may be necessary to achieve this goal,” he said.

The Acting Prime Minister also commended Western Province for aligning its development plan with the National Medium-Term Development Plan IV, making it the first province to present such an integrated plan alongside district plans. This alignment, he emphasized, is crucial for effective service delivery and sustainable progress.
