Tkatchenko Calls for Calm Amid Ethnic Tensions Following Fatal Attack in Port Moresby
The Member for Moresby South and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Justin Tkatchenko, visited the haus krai of a young man from Tari, Hela Province, who tragically passed away from injuries sustained in an attack by a group of young men in Port Moresby South. The incident, which had the potential to escalate into ethnic conflict, prompted the grieving family to demand financial compensation from the alleged suspects' families.
Upon his visit, Tkatchenko addressed the emotional situation at the deceased’s family home, where they were holding a haus krai outside the residence of one of the nine suspects. His timely intervention helped avert further tensions between the involved parties.
In a statement, Tkatchenko strongly condemned the attack that led to the young man’s death but emphasized the importance of allowing the legal system to take its course. He reassured both families that the suspects, who are now in police custody, would face justice in court. He reminded the public that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty under the law.
"I completely condemn the attack and the loss of life," Tkatchenko said. "However, we cannot condone actions that undermine the legal process. The suspects are now in custody, and it is critical that we allow the justice system to take its course. No one is above the law."
The Moresby South MP also clarified that his assistance to the deceased's family was not to fulfill any financial demands but to support the repatriation and funeral arrangements. Tkatchenko expressed that the family should be able to lay their loved one to rest with dignity and honor.
"I am supporting the repatriation and funeral costs so that the family can give their loved one a respectful farewell," Tkatchenko explained. "This is about ensuring the deceased is laid to rest with the honor he deserves."
Tkatchenko called for unity among the diverse communities in Kaugere, particularly between the Hela and Gulf residents, at a time when divisions threatened to arise.
"Whether you are from Hela or Gulf, we must stand together," he said. "Now is the time for solidarity, not for further violence or demands."
