PNG Officially Joins NRL Following Star-Studded Signing Event
In a landmark achievement for Papua New Guinea (PNG), the nation has officially secured a spot in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL) competition, set to begin in 2028. The historic milestone was celebrated during a formal signing ceremony held last night, attended by prominent leaders and dignitaries. Prime Minister James Marape led the event, joined by Australian High Commissioner John Feakes, Host City Governor Powes Parkop, and PNGNRL Bid CEO Andrew Hill, among other key figures.

The ceremony was further elevated by the presence of NRL icon Cameron Smith, who underscored the strong collaboration between PNG and the NRL. Also in attendance were Sports Minister Kinoka Feo and Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko, showcasing the government’s dedication to advancing rugby league within the country.
The evening’s festivities included a symbolic coin toss by Prime Minister Marape and other distinguished guests, followed by a dazzling fireworks display that illuminated the stadium. This momentous occasion marked PNG’s official entry into the NRL, fulfilling a long-held aspiration to compete at the highest level of the sport.
In his keynote speech, Prime Minister Marape highlighted the unifying role of rugby league in PNG, emphasizing its ability to bridge cultural and regional divides. He also paid tribute to rugby league stars Michael Marum, Marcus Bai, and Justin Olam, whose achievements have brought international recognition to PNG.
As PNG prepares for its NRL debut in 2028, efforts will now shift toward assembling a competitive team that reflects the nation’s resilience and spirit.
