According to officials, the PNG Government had been briefed on the aircraft’s arrival, and necessary diplomatic clearances were secured. The fighter jets were visible in the Port Moresby skies between 12:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., allowing residents to witness their presence before the aircraft took off for Australia. Authorities noted that the flight schedule remained subject to change due to air traffic control requirements, weather conditions, and operational availability.
The visit highlighted the longstanding defence ties between Australia and Papua New Guinea. The 75 Squadron has a historic connection to PNG, dating back to World War II when its Kittyhawk fighters arrived in Port Moresby in March 1942 to help defend against invasion. Defence officials described the stopover as a reflection of the enduring military partnership between the two nations.
Australia and PNG have a deep history of cooperation, standing together in significant battles such as the Kokoda Track and the Battle of Milne Bay. The flypast and stopover were seen as symbolic of the commitment to strengthening defence relations, especially as PNG marks its 50th anniversary of independence.
RAAF officials emphasized that safety, noise management, and environmental considerations were central to the planning and execution of the operation. As defence cooperation between Australia and PNG continues to evolve, leaders from both countries expressed optimism about future engagements and military collaboration.
