Papua New Guinea has officially named Sir Arnold Amet as its new Ambassador to the United States. His appointment was confirmed during a commissioning ceremony attended by Foreign Affairs Secretary Elias Wohengu, senior officials, and members of the diplomatic community. Government representatives highlighted the importance of this appointment in advancing diplomatic cooperation. Sir Arnold Amet is set to collaborate with PNG’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Hon. Fred Sarufa, and Ambassador to China, His Excellency Thaddeus Kamabanei. Strengthening communication between these diplomatic offices is expected to enhance engagements with both the United States and China, reinforcing PNG’s presence on the global stage.

The Marape-Rosso government reaffirmed its confidence in Sir Arnold Amet, emphasizing that his selection underwent rigorous assessment at the highest levels of government and the Commonwealth. Officials expressed their trust in his ability to effectively represent PNG’s interests in Washington, D.C., and contribute to the country’s foreign policy objectives.

A key achievement in PNG-U.S. relations has been the signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which officials describe as a landmark development. The agreement, negotiated with input from the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and key government agencies, is aimed at boosting security cooperation and economic ties. Sir Arnold Amet will play a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of this agreement under the Trump administration.

As Sir Arnold Amet prepares to take up his new post, the government remains optimistic about deepening PNG’s relationship with the United States. Officials acknowledged ongoing global challenges but stressed the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties. The appointment is seen as a strategic move to ensure continued collaboration and progress in PNG’s international partnerships.
