Papua New Guinea Commissioner of Police, David Manning, has confirmed the deaths of two illegal miners following an attempted incursion into a restricted area of critical infrastructure in Porgera, Enga Province. According to Commissioner Manning, the illegal miners, who were armed, fired at security personnel during their attempt to enter the facility. In response, security forces acted in defense of the infrastructure and personnel, resulting in the deaths of the two individuals. He emphasized that authorities would not tolerate the illegal possession of weapons or any threats to critical infrastructure and communities.
Manning stated that the safety of local communities and the protection of vital infrastructure remain the government's top priorities. He expressed regret over the loss of life but maintained that those involved had been held accountable for their actions. Security forces are continuing operations in the surrounding areas to locate any co-offenders linked to the incident.
