The SP PNG Hunters have officially revealed their 33-man squad for the upcoming 2025 Hostplus Cup season. The announcement, made at Nature Park in Port Moresby, showcased a mix of returning players and fresh recruits, signaling a new chapter for the club. The squad includes 11 new faces, underscoring the team’s intent to build on last year’s historic finals appearance, the first in seven years.

Under the guidance of second-year head coach Paul Aiton, the Hunters have undergone an intense preseason in preparation for the competition. The team aims to improve on its previous campaign, which saw them secure a top-six finish. Aiton acknowledged the rigorous training sessions, stating that the players had shown great determination as they geared up for the challenges ahead.

The unveiling event was attended by corporate sponsors, media representatives, and key stakeholders, reflecting the significance of the squad announcement. The presence of major partners highlighted the continued support for the country’s premier rugby league team as it strives for greater success in 2025.

The new inclusions feature standout talents from various Digicel Cup franchises, adding depth and strength to the squad. Among the fresh recruits are Rabaul Gurias’ forwards Himson Ulalom and Steven Bruno, Lae Tigers trio Zebedy Kip, Douglas David, and Graham Rex, and Central Dabaris’ Vane Manuma. Enga Mioks’ Limbi Henry, Mt Hagen Eagles’ duo Emmanuel Anis and Lynchill Kiap, and Hela Wigmen’s Murray Connors and Jacob Lot have also joined the ranks, bolstering the team’s forward pack.

Aiton expressed confidence in the squad, emphasizing the importance of the preseason trials in assessing the team’s strengths. He noted that while many players were new to the setup, they had adapted well and brought fresh energy to the group. He also highlighted the blend of experience and youth, believing it would be instrumental in the Hunters’ ambitions for the season.

With their opening match against the Mackay Cutters set for March 8 at BBP Print Stadium, Aiton stressed the need for consistency and execution. He outlined the team’s goal of finishing in the top four, stating that strong weekly performances would be crucial in achieving that objective. The coach remained optimistic about the team’s potential, expressing excitement about the squad’s development.

The squad’s forward pack has been reinforced with size and physicality, as key recruits like Bruno, Ulalom, Connors, Henry, Lot, Anis, Kip, and Manuma complement the existing core of experienced players. Kumul prop Koso Bandi has also returned after training with the Central Dabaris due to disciplinary reasons. Aiton explained that the team had a variety of playing styles within the squad, which would provide versatility throughout the season.

The Hunters’ preparations have also included monitoring the recovery of key players such as Epel Kapinias, Seal Kalo, and Robert Mathias. Aiton confirmed that the coaching staff was closely assessing their fitness levels to ensure they would be ready to contribute during the season. With a balanced squad in place, the team remains focused on improving its overall performance.
