MP James Donald Rejects Both Sides in PNG’s Political Showdown
Papua New Guinea’s North Fly Member of Parliament, James Donald, has announced his decision to abstain from voting in the upcoming motion of no confidence against Prime Minister James Marape and Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas. In a statement released on Friday, Donald emphasized that he would neither support Marape nor cast his vote for Ipatas, opting instead to remain neutral during the crucial parliamentary vote.
Donald, who is aligned with the Opposition, explained that his decision was driven by a sense of duty to his conscience, his constituents in North Fly, and the nation as a whole. “I wish to make my position unequivocally clear—I will not be voting for either James Marape or Sir Peter Ipatas,” he stated. “Instead, I have chosen to abstain from this vote.”

While acknowledging Sir Peter Ipatas as the Opposition’s nominee for Alternate Prime Minister, Donald expressed reservations about supporting him as the next leader of Papua New Guinea. “I hold no ill will, grudges, or personal vendettas against Sir Peter,” he clarified. However, he added, “I cannot, in good conscience, support someone I do not fully believe in.”
Donald further elaborated that none of his preferred candidates for leadership were among those nominated for the role of Prime Minister. As an advocate for change within the current administration, he admitted frustration over the lack of suitable options. “I cannot blindly endorse individuals I lack faith in,” he remarked, asserting that his decision reflects both integrity and accountability to the people of North Fly.
In a departure from convention, Donald chose to publicly declare his neutrality ahead of the vote, citing a need for transparency and honesty in PNG’s political landscape. He noted that the no-confidence motion arose from the Supreme Court’s ruling, which found that Parliament had acted unconstitutionally. Donald urged lawmakers to prioritize upholding the Constitution and safeguarding the interests of the nation and its citizens during this pivotal moment.
Despite his decision to abstain, Donald reaffirmed his loyalty to the Opposition team, thanking colleagues for fostering respectful and constructive debates throughout the process. He stressed that while remaining part of the collective, he retains the right to make independent decisions based on his principles and responsibilities as an elected representative.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the no-confidence vote, Donald’s declaration highlights the complexities and moral dilemmas faced by lawmakers navigating turbulent political waters. His choice to step aside underscores the importance of integrity and accountability in governance—a message that resonates deeply amid these uncertain times.
