According to Governor Bird, the Opposition is determined to fight against what he described as the “tyranny of the majority Government.” He stated that the role of the Opposition is not just ceremonial but fundamental to the democratic structure of Parliament, where it must challenge and hold the Government accountable.

Governor Bird assured citizens that the Opposition would utilize its collective voice, intelligence, integrity, and courage to defend the rights and needs of the people. He stressed that their commitment is unwavering and that they are not intimidated by anyone in their pursuit of justice and good governance.

He also expressed hope that some Members of Parliament on the Government side would eventually respond to the concerns of the public and choose to make decisions that will bring about meaningful change. Bird emphasized the importance of conscience in leadership, suggesting that moral responsibility should guide decision-making.

Comparing the political struggle to a battle rather than a game, Bird said, “This is not a rugby match where the team with the greatest number should always win.” He highlighted that the real fight was for the future of Papua New Guineans and urged the public to stay focused on what truly matters for the nation.

Governor Bird concluded by encouraging citizens to remain strong and hopeful. He said the Opposition would not quit, reaffirming their loyalty to the country and its people. “This is our country too and it is worth fighting for,” he stated.
