PNG Politics : Peter O’Neill Urges PM Marape to Resign for New Leadership
Former Prime Minister and Member for Ialibu-Pangia, Peter O’Neill, has called on Prime Minister James Marape to step down and make way for fresh leadership within the PANGU Pati, as Papua New Guinea braces for a vote of no confidence scheduled for April 15, 2025.
O’Neill said his appeal comes at a critical time when PNG is facing serious economic and social challenges, and fresh leadership is needed to guide the nation forward. He reflected on his own resignation in 2019, stating that he stepped down for the good of the country when it was clear the people wanted change.

“In 2019, I believed I was leading PNG in the right direction,” O’Neill said. “But the people made it clear—they wanted a new Prime Minister, and I respected that. Now, I urge Prime Minister Marape to consider doing the same.”
O’Neill emphasized that the PANGU Pati needs renewed leadership to drive effective and responsive governance. He said new perspectives within the party could help revive public confidence and better address the needs of Papua New Guineans.
He added that giving other leaders in the party the opportunity to lead could strengthen PANGU’s ability to navigate the country through its current hardships and rebuild the economy.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the upcoming no confidence vote, O’Neill’s call adds momentum to political debate and raises questions about the future direction of PNG’s leadership.
