PNG's Air Niugini Flight Returns to Port Moresby After Mid-Air Windshield Crack

A Papua New Guinea-bound Air Niugini flight from Port Moresby to Brisbane was forced to turn back mid-flight on Wednesday, April 9, following the discovery of a crack in the pilot’s windshield.

Flight PX003, operated by a Boeing 767 aircraft, departed Port Moresby in the morning but experienced the incident approximately 40 minutes into its journey. The cockpit crew, led by Captain Lawrence Koyama and First Officer Toea Hehuni, made the decision to return to Jacksons International Airport as a precautionary measure.

According to Air Niugini, the aircraft landed safely in Port Moresby without incident. All passengers were safely disembarked and later re-boarded onto a replacement aircraft, which departed for Brisbane at 11:05am.

The airline confirmed that its engineering team has since replaced the damaged windshield and returned the aircraft to service. No injuries were reported, and operations have resumed as normal.

Air Niugini praised the flight crew, including Purser Jenny Banasi and the rest of the team on board, for their calm and professional handling of the situation. The airline stated that the crew’s actions reflected its commitment to passenger safety and operational excellence.

The national carrier also expressed appreciation to its passengers for their patience and cooperation during the unexpected delay. Air Niugini reiterated that safety remains its top priority across all areas of operation.
