East Sepik Governor Allan Bird Demands End to Media Censorship in PNG

Governor Allan Bird from East Sepik has spoken out strongly against recent moves to silence journalists in Papua New Guinea. “The suspension of journalist Cullighan Tanda after he interviewed me is very disturbing,” Bird said. He has been involved with FM100 since 2003 when “Roger Hau’ofa flew to Madang for our first interview.”

Bird continued supporting FM100 after Roger’s death under Douglas Dimagi and Cullighan Tanda’s leadership. He noted, “My penultimate interview with Cullighan was FM100’s highest-rated show.” Cullighan called him at the last minute needing support, and Bird responded.

Bird expressed regret about the response from FM100’s management: “I met their CEO before the interview and expected any concerns to be raised then, but was disappointed by their reaction.” He has since offered Cullighan guidance and is waiting to hear back.

He also mentioned another EMTV reporter terminated after covering a story on Section 145 in court. “Although I have never met this reporter, it signals a worrying crackdown,” Bird said.

Bird called on all Papua New Guineans to join a peaceful boycott by “stopping advertising on EMTV and FM100, both owned or linked to Telikom PNG.” He urged people to switch telecommunications providers.

He concluded, “I will cut all ties with Telikom PNG and move to Digicel and Vodafone. It is time for citizens to unite and stand against government suppression of press freedom.”
