PNG Forestry, Treasury Summoned Over Log Export Concerns

Papua New Guinea’s Special Parliamentary Committee on Public Sector Reform and Service Delivery has summoned the Department of Treasury, PNG Forest Authority, and third-party firm SGS for an inquiry into round log export inspections.

The committee, chaired by Northern Governor Gary Juffa, wants to examine why SGS — previously responsible for export inspections — is no longer involved, and how the government plans to enforce its policy of ending round log exports by 2025.

Juffa said the disappearance of SGS from inspection roles has sparked concerns over compliance and oversight, prompting the committee to seek answers from all parties involved.

He stressed that the country’s natural resources must be protected through effective systems and that coordination among agencies is essential. Treasury’s perspective on the transition is also being sought.

According to Juffa, the inquiry is about identifying gaps and improving how government systems function, particularly those tied to forestry export regulations.

He added that these discussions are critical as the government prepares to halt the export of raw logs within the next two years.

Juffa concluded that Papua New Guinea must make informed decisions to safeguard its forest resources for future generations.
