PNG Prime Minister Marape Commends Election of Pope Leo XIV

 Papua New Guinea has formally launched its Permanent Mission in Geneva, strengthening its diplomatic representation with the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and other international bodies.

PNG Opens Permanent Mission in Geneva, Boosting Global Diplomacy Ahead of 50th Anniversary

Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko officiated the opening ceremony on Thursday, May 8, 2025, marking a significant milestone in PNG’s global engagement strategy. The ceremony was attended by diplomats from the Commonwealth, Pacific Island nations, and Small Island States, along with PNG’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Fred Sarufa, and senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Tkatchenko thanked the Government of Switzerland for its support in establishing the Mission and acknowledged the contributions of the United Nations and the Commonwealth Secretariat. He emphasized that the Mission would strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, education, technology, and innovation.

He further noted that PNG’s presence in Geneva underscores the Marape-Rosso Government’s commitment to expanding representation in strategic international hubs. “This new Mission opens doors for stronger people-to-people ties, enhanced business linkages, and more coordinated regional efforts,” he stated.

The Minister highlighted the importance of PNG’s active participation in global discussions on human rights, health, intellectual property, and trade. He reiterated the country's support for the WTO’s multilateral trading system and stressed the need to amplify the Pacific's collective voice on the global stage.
