PNG Prime Minister Marape Commends Election of Pope Leo XIV
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has conveyed his sincere congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on being elected the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Prime Minister Marape remarked that the Pope’s election comes at a crucial time when the world is in search of moral direction, peace, compassion, and renewed hope amidst ongoing global challenges. He extended the nation’s best wishes on behalf of all Papua New Guineans, including the country’s strong Catholic population.
He said Papua New Guinea joins millions around the globe in offering prayers for wisdom and strength to guide the new Pope in his spiritual leadership of the Vatican and the Catholic Church.
Marape acknowledged the Catholic Church’s historic and ongoing contributions to Papua New Guinea, especially in education, health, and promoting social justice. He emphasized the Church's key role in shaping the country's ethical and social development long before independence.
The Prime Minister expressed optimism that under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, the Catholic Church would continue to be a symbol of faith and human dignity. He also reaffirmed PNG’s commitment to maintaining a close partnership with the Holy See.
He concluded by praying that Pope Leo XIV would be divinely guided as he leads the Church and continues its mission to uplift the marginalized and inspire a return to spiritual values.
