PNG Opposition Claims Budget Funds Delayed, Warns of Economic Mismanagement

Papua New Guinea’s Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa has raised the alarm over what he describes as the Government’s failure to release all 2025 budget allocations, warning of a deepening financial crisis in the country.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Tomuriesa claimed that many MPs, departments, and agencies were still waiting for funds promised in the first quarter of the year. He specifically pointed to the District Services Improvement Programme (DSIP), saying only K1 million out of the K10 million allocated per district had been received so far.

“We’re five months into the year and only a fraction of the DSIP funds have been disbursed,” Tomuriesa said. “At least K4 million should have been released by now. These funds are critical to service delivery across PNG.”

He accused the Marape-led Government of poor fiscal management and demanded an explanation about the country’s economic situation.

“There appears to be a serious cash-flow problem and signs of mismanagement. Sectors like health, education, police, and defence are still waiting for their full budget allocations,” he said.

Tomuriesa urged Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey to break his silence and update the nation on the financial state of PNG.

“The people of Papua New Guinea are being left in the dark. This is a chaotic and unacceptable state of financial governance,” he added.
