“This outcome demonstrates the maturity and resilience of Australian democracy – a system that continues to serve as a model for democratic governance in the Pacific,” Marape said.
He went on to underscore the historic bond between the two countries, citing the foundational relationship between Australia’s Labor Party and PNG’s Pangu Pati. Marape noted that both parties played pivotal roles during Papua New Guinea’s journey to independence in 1975.
“It holds special significance that Prime Minister Albanese leads the same party that, under the leadership of the late Gough Whitlam, stood alongside the Pangu Pati government of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare in achieving our peaceful transition to independence,” he remarked.
The PNG Prime Minister also applauded Albanese’s consistent support for Pacific nations, particularly his backing of Papua New Guinea’s development agenda and regional leadership ambitions. He welcomed Australia’s continued investments under Albanese’s leadership in key sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, climate resilience, digital advancement, and regional security.
Marape also highlighted the strengthening of cultural and people-to-people connections, with sport — especially rugby league — playing a vital role.
“Rugby league is more than just a sport in Papua New Guinea; it is deeply embedded in our national identity,” Marape said. “Prime Minister Albanese’s support for PNG’s inclusion in the NRL has not only strengthened bilateral ties but also ignited hope among countless young Papua New Guineans.”
The statement reaffirmed the ongoing commitment of both leaders to enhancing cooperation and fostering closer ties between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
