PNG's Governor Parkop Hails Pacific Islands Event as Platform for Regional Peace

Papua New Guinea's National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop praised the Pacific Islands cultural event as a powerful platform for peace and cultural exchange. Speaking during the festivities, he reaffirmed his commitment to promoting Port Moresby as a regional centre for unity and diplomacy.

The celebration brought together five Pacific nations—New Zealand, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Samoa, and American Samoa—on 16 and 17 May at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium. Each country proudly presented its heritage through traditional attire, performances, and public displays.

Opening the event was a Float March from Ela Beach to the stadium on 16 May, showcasing colourful floats, music, and cultural dance routines. The lively procession drew attention from all corners of the city and marked the official launch of the celebrations.

The following day featured a lineup of performances starting with the Pacific Island Story and a Call to Country. Miss Hiri Hanenamo, Louisa Margaret Udia, welcomed participants and guests, setting a respectful and spiritual tone for the day.

One of the standout moments was a mesmerising poi dance by Te Kapa Haka Ngati Whakaue, a Maori cultural group from Rotorua. Samoan cultural icons Pati Levasa and Moemoana Schwenke also lit up the stage with traditional fire knife and siva dances.

Workshops, food stalls, and merchandise stalls filled the stadium’s grounds. Cultural exhibitions—including weapon demonstrations and drumming performances—allowed attendees to actively engage with Pacific customs and traditions.

The two-day event not only celebrated Pacific diversity but also strengthened regional friendships. As the countdown to PNG’s 50th Independence continues, the festival served as a timely reminder of the shared identity and unity across the Pacific.
