SP PNG Hunters Secure Round 9 Win Over Norths Devils

 SP PNG Hunters claimed a hard-fought 24-18 victory over Norths Devils in Round 9 of the Hostplus Cup at Bishop Park in Brisbane on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The Hunters scored four tries and sealed the match with a strong second-half performance.


The Devils started strong, with winger Jordan Lipp scoring a hat-trick of tries in the 12th, 16th, and 56th minutes. He also successfully converted all three tries, keeping the home side firmly in contention throughout the game.

However, the PNG Hunters responded with resilience and pace. Solo Wane opened their scoring in the 20th minute, followed by a try from Alex Max in the 35th minute, leveling the scores before the break.

At halftime, both teams were locked at 12-12, setting up a tense second half. The Hunters came out determined, with five-eighth Jamie Mavoko breaking through for a crucial try in the 65th minute.

Trevor Solu was instrumental with the boot, converting three of the four tries at critical moments in the 22nd, 66th, and 78th minutes, helping keep the Hunters ahead as the game entered its final stages.

Sanny Wabo’s try in the 76th minute sealed the win for the visiting team, who showed better discipline and control in the closing minutes to hold off a late Devils surge.

This victory lifts the Hunters further up the Hostplus Cup ladder as they continue their campaign, showing improved cohesion and attacking combinations under coach Paul Aiton.
