PNG's Northern Governor Praises Social Media for Exposing Assault of Mother and Child

Papua New Guinea Northern Governor Gary Juffa has praised social media users for exposing the brutal assault of a mother and her child in Madang over alleged shoplifting. Juffa, who also chairs the Special Parliamentary Committee on Public Sector Reform and Service Delivery, acknowledged that the swift public sharing of the footage helped trigger immediate action from authorities.

He said he promptly forwarded the footage to Police Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jnr and Community Development Minister Jason Peter, who both responded swiftly, initiating investigations that led to the detention of the alleged perpetrators.

“I commend the efforts of citizens online and the quick response of the ministers. This case shows how collaboration between the public and leaders can bring about meaningful justice,” Governor Juffa stated.

Juffa questioned the legality of the actions taken by those who detained and physically assaulted the mother and daughter, raising serious concerns about the rule of law and the treatment of vulnerable people.

He challenged investigators to consider whether the use of force was proportionate, and asked if the assailants—believed to be private security guards—operated within any legal mandate.

The governor also called for broader societal introspection, urging authorities to consider the deeper socio-economic issues that may push mothers and children into desperate situations such as theft for food and basic needs.

“It’s time to reflect on why families are resorting to such acts. Our society may be failing to meet their basic survival needs,” he warned.
