PNG’s Hekari Push Auckland to the Limit in OFC Women’s Final

Hekari United came close to making history in women’s football for Papua New Guinea but were edged out 1-0 by Auckland United in the OFC Women’s Champions League final in Tahiti.

Danielle Canham’s goal in the 26th minute was the decider, as Auckland retained the title in a match that echoed last year’s grand final scoreline. Hekari fought valiantly, especially in the first half, but couldn’t capitalise on their chances.

Auckland’s captain Talisha Green led a well-organized defence that shut down Hekari’s advances. The second half saw Auckland pushing for another goal, but Hekari’s backline held strong under pressure.

The victory earned Auckland United a spot in the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, marking another milestone for the New Zealand club.

Golden Boot honours went to Zoe Benson with eight goals, while the Golden Glove was awarded to goalkeeper Hannah Mitchell, both from Auckland.

A jubilant Talisha Green praised the team’s resilience and spirit after the match. “I’m so proud of everyone involved. It’s been a tough journey with a lot of setbacks, but we did it together,” she said.

While Hekari return home without the trophy, they will now gear up for the upcoming domestic Women’s Conference Soccer League season in Papua New Guinea.
