Port Moresby – Transparency Papua New Guinea (PNG) has issued a stern call to Prime Minister James Marape, demanding immediate and decisive action against the nation's pervasive corruption. The watchdog organization highlighted a series of unresolved high-profile cases, including the contentious Paraka legal payments scandal, the financially damaging UBS loan, and alleged mismanagement at Ok Tedi Mining Limited.

"The time for mere words is over; the Prime Minister must demonstrate tangible action," stated Peter Aitsi, Chair of Transparency PNG. He pointed out that these unresolved scandals have significantly undermined public trust in the government's integrity.
Since assuming office in 2019, Prime Minister Marape has repeatedly vowed to eradicate corruption. However, Transparency PNG contends that his administration’s performance has been inadequate. Recent decisions by anti-corruption bodies have fueled skepticism about the government's commitment to these pledges. The group is now demanding independent investigations into the aforementioned cases.
The Paraka legal payments case, involving allegations of millions in fraudulent transactions, continues to cast a long shadow. Similarly, the controversial UBS loan, connected to a 2014 oil deal, resulted in substantial financial losses for PNG. The ongoing financial irregularities at Ok Tedi Mining Limited further exacerbate concerns about governance and accountability.
Transparency PNG has also emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Despite its establishment in 2020, the agency remains hampered by a lack of full operational capacity and delays in appointing crucial personnel. The organization further advocates for judicial reforms to ensure that those responsible for corruption are held accountable.
Public discontent is escalating across PNG, a nation rich in natural resources where the mining and energy sectors are key revenue generators. Citizens are increasingly vocal about the need for transparency, as corruption diverts crucial funds away from essential public services. Transparency PNG insists that Prime Minister Marape must act without delay to rebuild public confidence.
"This is a pivotal moment for the Prime Minister to exhibit genuine leadership," Aitsi concluded, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
