Two Held by PNG Police Over Brutal Beating of Mother and Daughter in Madang

PNG Police in Madang have confirmed the arrest of two young men linked to a violent beating of a mother and her daughter at a local supermarket, following an outpouring of public concern after video footage surfaced online.

The video, widely shared on social media, showed the pair being attacked by men believed to be security employees. The arrests were made at Laiwaden Oval earlier today.

Police named the suspects as David Dinaiwa, 27, and Micah Tandaku, 20, both from Southern Highlands Province. Dinaiwa is alleged to have physically assaulted the victims, while Tandaku filmed the act. The duo claimed they were off duty at the time of the incident.

Formal charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful detention have been laid under PNG’s Criminal Code. Police confirmed that two additional suspects were named during interrogation and have since been identified.

The video of the mother and daughter being beaten by security personnel in Madang quickly went viral, sparking a wave of national outrage. PNG social media users tagged police departments and called for swift justice, which aided law enforcement in tracking down the suspects and location.

The victim, Josephine Kadignam, 45, verified that the assault occurred inside the Yaho Supermarket warehouse.

In a public update, the Madang PPC said the shop had been located and the identified persons of interest were being pursued. Officers are now preparing to formally interview the victims.

Police assured the public that investigations are ongoing and pledged to release a comprehensive media brief once further progress is made.
