UK Medical Team Arrives to Assist PNG’s First Kidney Transplant

Papua New Guinea is poised to perform its first kidney transplant this week, with a team of British specialists arriving to assist in the procedure. The development was confirmed by Dr. Hoxxen Okti Poki, the national Chief Surgeon and head of the transplant program.

Dr. Poki announced that nine transplant experts from the United Kingdom had landed in Port Moresby and commenced preparations, with another member due to arrive later in the week. He said the team had extensive experience helping countries like PNG launch similar health initiatives.

He attributed the program’s progress to strong partnerships, particularly from the National Fisheries Authority, and emphasized that the milestone is the outcome of three years of tireless work. Dr. Poki commended the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Paki Molumi, for his ongoing support.

The first transplant is scheduled to take place at Port Moresby General Hospital before the weekend, and Dr. Poki stated that the country had reached an irreversible phase in its medical journey. Minister for Health Elias Kapavore lauded the project, calling it a significant advancement for PNG’s health sector.
