Air China Enters PNG Market, Brings New Competition for Local Airlines

The arrival of Air China into Papua New Guinea’s aviation scene is intensifying competition for local carriers, including the national airline, Air Niugini.

Air China is reportedly assessing route opportunities to Port Moresby, a move that aviation analysts say could reshape international air travel access to and from PNG. Industry observers believe this signals growing Chinese interest in establishing a stronger commercial presence in the Pacific.

In response, Air Niugini’s CEO Gary Seddon welcomed the competition, stating that it pushes airlines to improve their services and remain efficient. “We don’t fear competition — we embrace it,” he said. “It challenges us to raise our standards and seek smarter partnerships.”

Seddon noted that Air Niugini is prepared to compete in a changing market but also remains open to cooperative arrangements with Air China if mutual benefits can be realized.

He said the airline’s existing partnerships with regional players such as Cathay Pacific and Fiji Airways have proven successful and demonstrate Air Niugini’s flexibility in a competitive environment.

The move by Air China comes amid a broader trend of increasing Chinese influence in Pacific aviation, with analysts predicting further market shifts in the coming months.
