Four PNG Cadets Begin Pilot Training in Australia Under Air Niugini Program

Air Niugini has sent off its second group of pilot cadets, including one female, to undertake 18 months of training in South Australia. The cadets departed Port Moresby on May 10 for Flight Training Adelaide as part of the airline’s National Pilot Cadet Program.

The selected individuals—Christopher Morea Saisagu, Salmon Ephraim Hans, Daera Konio Reid, and Eruel Toovey Verave—were chosen from thousands of applicants across the country. Candidates underwent a thorough screening process involving academic and aptitude assessments as well as interviews conducted by Air Niugini and the training institute.

Chief Executive Officer Gary Seddon, in a farewell meeting with the cadets and their families, reaffirmed Air Niugini’s commitment to quality training, noting that K1 million is being invested per cadet. He called on the group to pursue excellence, discipline, and professionalism.

Also present were Captain Samiu Taufa and Captain Joachim Ortlauf—both former cadets—who offered words of encouragement. They acknowledged the challenges of training but urged the cadets to stay resilient and disciplined.

Upon graduation, the cadets will receive their Commercial Pilot Licence and multi-engine rating before returning to Air Niugini for in-flight training. The cadet program was revived in 2023 to help meet the global demand for qualified pilots.
