Wastewater Testing Reveals Polio Virus in PNG Cities
Environmental testing of wastewater in Papua New Guinea has detected the presence of poliovirus type 2 in Port Moresby and Lae, prompting serious concern from health authorities. The samples, collected from sewage systems in both cities, mark the first detection of the virus since the country was declared polio-free in 2000.
Health Minister Elias Kapavore confirmed the findings and said the Department of Health is working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the Australian Government to assess the risk and implement necessary preventive measures. He stated that the immediate priority is to analyse available data, strengthen disease surveillance, and prepare health teams to respond effectively if the situation escalates.

While no clinical cases of polio have been reported so far, the discovery of the virus in wastewater indicates potential silent transmission within the population. The Health Minister warned that any confirmed clinical case would trigger an official outbreak declaration, especially with children under five years of age at the highest risk of infection.
Minister Kapavore emphasized that one of the major contributing factors to the re-emergence of such viruses is the country’s low routine immunisation coverage. He urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility in ensuring children receive timely vaccinations, while also calling on health workers to maintain regular outreach programs.
He stated that health facilities across the country are equipped with adequate vaccines and cold-chain systems. Provincial and district-level health authorities have been directed to intensify immunisation coverage and identify high-risk areas for targeted responses, supported by ongoing community awareness campaigns.
The Health Minister also confirmed that the Department will brief the Prime Minister and has already held several meetings with key stakeholders. Officials continue to monitor the situation, aiming to eliminate the virus before it spreads further among vulnerable communities.
