PNG’s NRL Debut Remains Set for 2028 Despite Perth Bears’ Early Entry
Papua New Guinea’s planned entry into the National Rugby League (NRL) remains on course for 2028, despite the recent confirmation of a Western Australian team entering a year earlier.
According to PNG NRL team chief executive Andrew Hill, the announcement that the Perth Bears will join the competition in 2027 does not impact PNG’s timeline. He clarified that while PNG was initially tipped to be the 18th franchise, the country is now positioned to become the 19th.

Hill indicated that the development is not seen as a setback but as an opportunity to enhance preparations. He said PNG’s bid had always been strong, and its early endorsement last year highlighted the league’s confidence in the project.
He explained that the inclusion of the Perth Bears was anticipated, noting that PNG is not being replaced or pushed aside. The goal, he added, is now to ensure PNG’s team is ready to compete in 2028.
Hill stressed the importance of continuing investment in junior pathways and youth development programs, particularly targeting players aged 15 to 18. He said this would ensure a steady pipeline of local talent ready for the NRL stage.
Looking ahead, Hill acknowledged that while challenges remain, there are also significant incentives for players considering joining the Port Moresby-based team, including potential financial advantages and the opportunity to be part of a new legacy.
