PNG Judiciary Under Fire: Law Society Rejects Niningi’s Claims

Amid rising concern over judicial independence in Papua New Guinea, the PNG Law Society has slammed Attorney General Pila Niningi for publicly accusing national judges of nepotism and favouritism through the wantok system.

The Law Society released a statement this week calling the remarks “outrageous and unacceptable,” asserting that they amount to a direct assault on the judiciary’s integrity and independence.

It described the comments as reckless and warned that they risk undermining public confidence in PNG’s justice system and the democratic framework built on the separation of powers.

“The judiciary must be free to discharge its duties without political intimidation,” the society said, calling for respect for the Constitution and the rule of law.

The statement defended national judges as loyal and professional citizens who apply the law without fear or favour, rejecting claims that they are influenced by personal relationships.

The Law Society has demanded that Niningi withdraw his comments and desist from making further allegations that could erode the credibility of the courts.

The society concluded by reaffirming its role in defending the judiciary and pledged continued vigilance in upholding the rule of law in Papua New Guinea.
