PNG MP Questions Macron Honour Amid New Caledonia Concerns
PNG's Hiri-Koiari MP Hon. Keith Iduhu has raised concerns over the naming of a lookout and trail in Central Province after French President Emmanuel Macron, without prior consultation with traditional landowners of Variarata National Park.
President Macron made history in 2023 when he became the first French President to visit the picturesque park located in the Koiari region of Central Province. During his official visit, he was joined by Prime Minister James Marape, other state ministers, and a French delegation on a scenic hike to the main lookout. It was then that Marape announced the naming of the ‘Macron Lookout’ and ‘Macron Track’ in honour of the visiting leader.

While Hon. Iduhu said he and his constituents were honoured to host the French President, he expressed concern that the decision was made unilaterally and without regard for the views of the local landowners. “Honours should not just be given for the sake of giving them,” he said.
The MP highlighted that the timing of this tribute coincided with growing scrutiny of France’s actions in New Caledonia, where constitutional reforms have sparked protests and claims of political disenfranchisement of the indigenous Kanak people. He questioned the symbolism of bestowing such honours amid France’s continued resistance to New Caledonia’s independence.
He said the Marape government must remember PNG’s long-standing support for Melanesian solidarity, citing the first Chan administration’s intervention in Vanuatu as an example of the country’s commitment to self-determination in the region.
Hon. Iduhu further urged the government to consult with indigenous landowners on the matter and to reflect carefully on the political message being sent through such symbolic gestures. “Let us be clear about our support for the right to self-determination for all indigenous people,” he stated.
He reiterated that the park itself would retain its original name, but said the naming of key landmarks must be grounded in respect, consultation, and democratic values.
