The PNG SP Hunters were handed a heavy 50-16 loss by the Redcliffe Dolphins during Round 12 of the QRL Hostplus Cup, in front of their home crowd at Santos National Football Stadium. The visitors overwhelmed the Hunters with a nine-try onslaught.
An explosive start saw the Dolphins open the scoring through Dantoray Lui in the second minute, followed by Aublix Tawha’s effort five minutes later. With conversions by Joshua James, the Dolphins surged to an early lead.
The Hunters mounted a brief response in the 22nd minute when Solo Wane crossed the line and Solu converted, narrowing the score to 12-6. But the momentum shifted back almost immediately, with Opacic scoring in the 27th minute.
By halftime, the Dolphins were leading 18-10, despite a late try from Elijah Roltinga for the Hunters. The missed conversion would later prove costly in the chase.
The Dolphins returned in the second half with renewed energy, piling on five more tries. Tom Opacic and Dantoray Lui each grabbed their second, while McGrath, Miles, and Tawha all found the line. Joshua James added a try of his own in the final minute, converting all late tries.
A second injury-impacted reshuffle saw Gairo Voro slot into fullback after Sanny Wabo left the field, further disrupting the Hunters’ game plan. Elijah Roltinga added one more try, converted by Solu, but the gap was too wide to close.
The Dolphins’ display underscored their attacking power, leaving the PNG outfit with a challenging road ahead to find winning form again in the Hostplus Cup.
